about

Welcome to Building Blocks, a sample pack series focusing on authentic fat, gritty, analog sounds, influenced by the bass heavy Drum & Bass sound of the early 2000's. Every sample has been created on a wealth of analogue and digital hardware for that authentic raw hardware sound of that era.

First in the series is this collection of 100 bass samples, such as 808 style, reese and modulated basslines. Many of these samples have been created from scratch or resampling sounds from previously released material under my Raiden & Kamikaze Space Programme aliases on vintage hardware equipment famous for making classic drum and bass.

These bass sounds were produced by creating tones on hardware synthesisers which were then sampled into an E-MU sampler via a large format mixing console, clipping the sound via various gain stages then combined with outboard effects and stomp boxes. After this everything is resampled back to the sampler for further manipulation and tracked back through the desk alongside more stomp boxes and rack gear.

I choose not to make loops, instead these are building blocks for further development for you to programme. I recommend loading the sounds to a sampler of your choice and use filters, LFOs and envelopes to modulate the sounds for the best results. The majority of the samples are in the key of F, but there are a few exceptions. I hope you enjoy them and if you make anything cool with the samples I'd love to hear it!

Relaunch [2021] curated by Chris Jarman aka Raiden aka Kamikaze Space Programme aka (1/2 Dot Product)

Brutal industrial sound design alongside intrinsic field recordings and sleeker, low tempos & frenetic energy of jungle, breakbeats and drum and bass, Jarman’s ability to manoeuvre between genres and style sees the music defy classification while spiralling from one spectrum of sound to the next
